The Patient Sentinel

Among the drying pickerelweed,
Where amber shallows catch the sun,
He stands as still as river reed,
Until the careless minnows run.

Slate feathers tucked against the chill,
An eye unblinking, sharp and keen;
A dagger locked within the bill,
Dissolving in the marshland green.

No hurried wing, no sudden start,
He counts the autumn hours slow;
A master of the quiet art,
Before the northern waters freeze.

Deep in the Adirondack wetlands, patience is the only strategy that works. While warblers and geese are already on the move, this Great Blue Heron stayed frozen in the shallows—almost invisible among the fading pickerelweed and sedges until the morning light caught the gray-blue edge of its wing.
Field Notes: Captured across the marsh shallows, framing the heron in its native cover to emphasize how seamlessly its slate plumage melts into the shifting autumn wetland grasses.
