Suspended in the Blue

The bog holds no wind today.
Only the weight of sky fallen inward,
Where clouds drift upside down
Through five feet of peat and silence.
A clump of sedge divides the white,
Its green needles anchored to nothing
Except the mirror of morning.
Lily pads rest like scattered coins
Across the blue floor of heaven,
Waiting for the ice
To seal the sky away.

Across Route 28 from Otter Bay on Raquette Lake, an Adirondack wetland sits completely still. In the absence of wind, the dark, tannin-stained water turns into a perfect pane of glass—reflecting the deep autumn blue and a drifting cumulus cloud so sharply that the cluster of sedges appears suspended directly in midair.
Field Notes: Captured with the Canon R5, framed in a balanced 1:1 square to anchor the floating sedge tussock directly within the heart of the reflected cloud.
