The Open Arch
The gloves were cut, the leather turned,
To build in stone what minds require;
Where once the kiln and tannery burned,
Now rises classical desire.
Beneath the broad Palladian crown,
The heavy doors stand open wide;
To gather in the working town,
And keep the quiet safe inside.
Though autumn strips the maple tall,
And shadows claim the limestone stair;
The common trust outlives them all,
Enduring in the morning air.
Field Notes: Morning light across the Beaux-Arts facade of the Gloversville Free Library on East Fulton Street. Designed by Albert Randolph Ross and completed in 1904 through a Carnegie gift, the French Renaissance and classical limestone entrance features colossal Ionic columns, ornate modillion cornices, and an arched portal centered beneath a cresting autumn sun. Framed against peak October color and deep blue skies, the structure remains one of the architectural anchors of the glove-making era in Fulton County.
Wide-angle capture on the Google Pixel 10 Pro , utilizing the computational raw DNG pipeline to balance the shadowed limestone recessed entryway against direct autumn backlight and bright sky.
