Under an October Sky
A northwest wind cleans out the sky,
Brisk and blustery through the eaves;
Above the roof, the stars wheel high,
Shining fierce through thinning leaves.
No absolute dark in the yard tonight—
Where neighborhood lanterns glow and spill,
Paling the lawn in borrowed light,
While shadows lean against the chill.
You feel it sharp on skin and face:
The turn of the year, the coming bite,
A silent frost to take its place
And silver the grass before morning light.
Step off the drive, latch shut the door,
Leave the wide cosmos to drift and gleam;
The windows wait with an amber floor,
A house tucked warm for sleep and dream.
Field Notes: The night was textbook October—breezy, cold, and razor-clear. While the pup took care of business in the yard, I locked the phone into the tripod for a few long exposures. Same scene as yesterday’s post, but an entirely different world under the stars.
I do miss true country dark; neighbors on both sides have security lights blazing all night, but the sky still managed to put on a show. Sure enough, crisp white frost coated the lawn on our morning walk. Fall has officially arrived!
