The Forest Floor Keeps Watch

Beneath the sweep of amber crown,
Where needles weave a sodden bed,
A solitary cup turns down
Its rim of wet, persistent red.

No trumpet announces where it stands,
No sunlight breaks the hemlock gloom;
It gathers dampness from the lands
And claims its modest, quiet room.

While overhead the branches shake,
And strip their autumn glory bare,
The hidden roots begin to wake
And hold the silent world in care.

A fragile roof against the cold,
That shelters rot and feeds the new,
A crimson jewel in the mold,
Still drinking deep of autumn dew.

Down among the damp hemlock duff and fallen needles on the forest floor, autumn tells a completely different story than the ridgelines above. While the canopy empties out, the ground is alive with quiet recyclers. This solitary Russula stood proud after a cool rain—its scarlet cap cupping fallen needles, gills immaculate, holding steady in the dark mulch while everything else falls apart.

Field Notes: Captured at ground level using a macro lens and extension tubes, combining a 25-exposure focus stack to keep the delicate gill structures, the crimson cap, and the fallen needles razor-sharp from front to back against the soft forest shadows.
