September 30th, Prelude to October
Turning the Season
A calm gray blanket fills the skies,
Mild and still the morning wakes.
The air is soft before it flies
Into the season of frosty flakes.
Today’s the day to turn the page,
With steady hands and easy grace:
The window units leave the stage,
Tucked quiet in their closet space.
The storm sash slides and locks in tight,
To guard the warmth within the sill;
The summer lawn gear takes to flight,
While winter tools await the chill.
There’s quiet joy in making room,
In packing summer fun away—
For soon the hillside trees will bloom
In scarlet, gold, and amber blaze.
We welcome in the crisp, dry air,
The brightest crown the mountain yields,
Until the snow falls soft and fair,
And spreads pure white across the fields.
In the yard, this panicle hydrangea captures the threshold perfectly—its creamy summer blooms have faded to dusty rose and autumn pink, standing beneath a maple canopy that is just beginning to whisper gold at the edges.
